BlogSWOT 14 – Crimson Kaie – Artist of the Day

crimson-caie

Amazing. Sometimes it happens to me that by SWOTting some blogs I fall in love with them. CrimsonKaie – it’s serious: I love your blog!

‘Hey, Baby, check it out, check it out….’ (Randy Jackson)

S:

- the essence of blogging for me: a blog with higher purpose. For Crimson the purpose is to promote ‘new/young/unknown/emerging artists in all visual media’. Simple, but great idea, much needed.

- you make consequently 1 post per day. Impressing.

- the design is simple but perfect:

font is perfect to read,

light background of the site underline the beauty of the pictures,

no unnecessary plugins,

the rotating picture cloud is awesome. (I had once the cloud of tags, but have never before seen this one!)

you look like someone…serious, who know art – good profile picture

W:

- I noticed some points of weaknesses, but in your case I have much more positive than negative things to mention about your blog. One of the points I would categorize as a weakness is the lack of categorizing. You just write your posts continuously and the only way of finding the entries older than last week is to go back and back and back…. Of course, there is also a photo cloud where I can randomly pick up a photo I like and through it read the post attched – that’s the only alternative. So in short: you hould divide your content into categories.

- as you mention in your sub-header, there is a price to win once an artist is named the ‘Artist of the Week’. But at the site there is no more evidence of such a contest, neither any winner…. – off hand I conclude that it is simply not working for you for now. So suggest deleting this until you will be ready to implement this competition.

O:

- I would say, there are many possibilities for you: consequently implementing your contest would be one of them, monitoring sites as ‘Daily Candy’ and ‘Talent House’ and see what are their solutions for gaining the visitors/artists. I would personally offer you a cooperation as my site WWomenGlobally is based more or less at the same principle as yours.

- involve the artists you feature in spreading a word about your site – once everyone of them everyday spread it to the network they have your site will be highly frequented very soon.

- you should also implement some ’share/bookmark’ buttons under your posts, so people can send your content forward! (I personally stumbled it already)

T:

- you need to be visible in order to be competitive. As simple as that.

- You should make a clear strategy for where you would like to be with your site in 1 year from now. As long as you do not exactly know what is the goal with your site, what do you want to achieve in the future, you risk of just writing for yourself.

I wish you all the best with achieving your goals, whatever they are.

I am also open for any form of cooperation with you if you’re interested in it.

I also placed your site as ‘Websites We Love’ – category.

And one more thing: keep up the great work!

American X-Factor

adam0408Even if I’m living in Germany, I follow American Idol as a social phenomenon ( I don’t even want to mention German Super Star finished last week – the winner  would probably not make the top 36 in US.)
Anyway, I have mixed – and sometimes even ambivalent feelings about the whole idea of that kind of shows. As indeed, it really sounds interesting once someone is singing Tears For Fears sounds like Simon & Garfunkel or singing Michael Jackson reminds the vocals of Axl Rose.

And – as I frankly admit – I loved  the fact that the voice aof Leona Lewis’ has been discovered in the 2006 edition of UK X-Factor. (She is also my all-time favourite not only for her great artistic expression but also for the humble and generous personality).

But I am well aware that that is a kind of pure and completely brainless entertainment that nobody really needs – except form the producers = moneymakers and the sponsors. Even for the new ’stars’ is that kind of fame very controversial to me, as they will always be connected with the shows they came from).

I have found a very interesting  interview with Simon Cowell - a man who is one of the people standing behind the majority of the most popular talent shows. The interview with Katie Couric is made for Today Show and in the video we got to know among others what are his true feelings for Paula Abdul, how look  the judges’ rooms behind the scenes of American Idol, why Randy Jackson eats only from the floor, etc, etc.

Fast Tube by Casper

And what more interesting, Simon Cowell says, that what he sees at the auditions is the ‘fame epidemic which makes people crazy – they would like to be famous so much that they don’t see how awful they are.’  And he – Dr. Cowell is there to cure them – even if it does not work.

But it seems to me that Dr. Cowell forgets about the fact that he is himself the one to blame for this epidemia that seems to constantly grow, from one year to another! As apparently, the shows and the results from selling the records of the artists involved are feeding his account in great style.

And I  believe that it is very much about the money, making money and always more money. ‘Money for nothing and the chicks for free’ (Dire Straits)
So what really hits me this year is the lack of Idol Gives Back - the event that in my eyes would contibute to the deeper meaning of American Idol. Especially in times of economic crisis it would be even more important to do it!!

So yes – the shows give the ordinary, sometimes talented people possibility to have their ‘5 minutes of fame’ and to have a part in the greatly prosperous entertainment industry. Very seldom it happens that through the shows some real talents are discovered.

But where does the idea go? where is the limit? how many of the Idols with X-factor are we all able to digest – globally? What happens to the ‘real’, generic artists who fight on their own?

The very same Simon Cowell said once that Bob Dylan would never win the show. This one sentence explains it all.

P.S. I don’t need to see the finale on Tuesday/Wednesday to know that the winner of the American Idol season 8, 2009 will be Adam Lambert. So what?

BlogSWOT 13 – An Englishman Abroad

 an-englishman-abroad

The next blog, AnEnglishmanAbroad

is a travel/photo/adventure blog. The SWOT is below:

S:

- great pictures

- great stories you have to tell!

- you are consequently personal which makes your stories honest and trusthworty

- congratulations with your followers: never saw so many on any other non-professional blog!

W:

- design is a crap. Absolute rubbish. I cannot believe you have so fantastic stories and pictures and you present them in this way. Oughhh! My concrete points as far as design is concerned are: no margin at all:

text and pictures are almost running away from the screen

no proper header – and the one you have you begin with a loooooong stripe (is it with purpose?) which looks very weird

the ‘about me’ section as well as the translator are almost invisibly placed at the VERY end of your long cover page. I guess noone can ever reach so deep. The about section should be at the VERY first place in your case (that is my personal view).

O:

- your design should be your biggest concern at the moment – try to implement a template which keeps the text more ‘focused’ in the middle of the page. You should also concentrate on ’selling’ your fantastic pictures better (rotating gallery….???)

- I think you do right thing by focusing on Stumble Upon – I can imagine that it makes your blog popular. But you may also try twitter or other social sites.

T:

- there are MANY travel sites. Your strong side is that you’re an Englishman and that is why: a) you do not have any problems with the language at the site and b)there are maybe not too many writing Englishmen Abroad (LOL!). Keep yourself in your own niche, so you will increase your chances to be recognizable.

All the best from me and happy blogging!

BlogSWOT 12 – Life As I Know It

life-as-i-know-itLifeAsIKnowIt.

This one is a personal blog, No doubt about it.

S:

- great header, amazing photo

- interesting writing style, honest which is priceless

- design of the blog is ok (however 2 columns would work as well)

- the posts are not too long, not too short which makes it easy to read

- I like when you are dividing your posts into smaller chapters – as you do it in case of BloggersUnite

W:

- as I mentioned before, you could probably enhace a bit your design with 2 columns set up. At the moment it is a bit crowdy at your site

- too many unnecessary sidebar plugins – they are de-concentrating me as a reader. Also they are placed in a chaotic way: twitter plugin here, facebook plugin there…

- ABSOLUTELY TOO MANY TAGS! as I know, they are actually not necessary as far as the good SEO is concerned and also they do not explain in ANY way what your blog is about (who is going to read them all?). So WHY are you doing that???

O:

- I know that your blog is personal, but you may be better recognizable by concentrating – if not on one subject – so on one direction. And make this direction visible to others. It may be e.g. a typical approach you have in life, one of your character traits or something you’re good at, e.g. honesty, compassion, insight into Bangladesh issues, etc. This approach seems to work very well in case of your other ‘niche’-blog about Bangladesh cricket.

T:

- this is always the part which is difficult to assess in case of personal blogs. Any other Bangladeshi personal blogger is a threat! SO one advice that I repeat in that case is: work on gaining some loyal circle of readers. This is the best tip I can give!

- a bit chaotic

BlogSWOT 11 – This Time This Space

this-time-this-spaceI was very honored that timethief asked to review her blog thistimethisspace.com.

Why? Timethief is the author of the absolutely wonderful blog onecoolsite.wordpress.com which is a true goldmine for all information about SEO and blogging. She used to go very deeply into the topics and as a bonus timethief has also a great insight into the legal issues thanks to her professional experience.

Timethief’s second blog is in her own words about ‘personal development, growth and relationships.

And my SWOT of it is below:

S:

- great name for the blog. It’s full of reflection, poetry and at the same time concrete: your blog is about current issues

- great categorizing

- loyal group of fans, concluding from the comments placed under every post

- I love your setup made for placing comments at the site – there is really time and space for everyone to give his/her oppinion and the comments grow into whole discussions. Additionally commentluv plugin is so visitor-friendly!

- your posts are well researched, extremely well done. The amount of posts made by guest bloggers makes me jealous!

W:

- I would say that my biggest concern about your blog is the fact that according to the title, it is supposed to be a blog on ‘personal development, growth and relationships’. And here I would argue that it is much more than that. Taking a look into the list of categories, I find there positions such as: Politics, Climate Changes, or even my favourite: WomenIssues. I believe that they are too general, too much connected to the world news.

- also, I cannot find any explanation as to the ‘growth’ – factor including in the title of your blog – think it is very much same as ‘personal development’ and it makes the whole idea/purpose of your blog too complicated to remember.

- I do not particularily like your colours at the site: as I mentioned before, I perceive blue as a color of banking – it is cold, it is cool and it is formal. To me, it clashes with the personal atmosphere of your blog. Additionaly, I do not like the violet borders either. The design of the blog as it looks right now looks a bit sad (dark, cold colors) and boring.

- lack of brand-feeling = lack of logo

O:

- I think you might brand yourself better by implementing a well done, eye-catching logo. It may be in form of a photo illustrating ‘This Time, This Space’.  You may win a lot by doing this as your blog would be much better recognizable.

- I know that you’re using twitter - and know also your sceptical view about it. I personally have twitter accounts for both of my blogs ( and the 3rd one for myself  LOL!) and strongly believe that it works in terms of differentiating yourself in the twitter space, assuming that twitter is a great traffic generator (and it is – see this post!) . I believe that the clear differentiating and branding of your blog (e.g. also on twitter) would bring you even more loyal readers.

- I think also you may change your wordpress.com blog into a .com domain. It would make you much more ‘professional’ or rather underline the professionalism you represent.

- you may try to use a video clips from time to time – it would live up your site essentially.

T:

- you may take a look into other blogs connected to similar topics.  From what I see there are a lot of well known (from TV, books, etc) therapists and personal development coaches, so the competition is strong here, no doubt about it. In case you do not have any plans to publish a personal-development book yourself, you may place yourself as a forwarder of the news in this category (this is an O actually). You may also try if it would be possible to start a cooperation with any of the well-known names you feel close to in terms of ideas and the values in life – it’s also a suggestion which turns a T into an O.

Overall, I think you have a great blog, very much worth reading, recommended to absolutely all men/women/old and young who are interested in personal development. Great work, TT!

P.S. My favourite post is Internet Relationships - agree with one of your visitors: a true eye opener!

Passionate For Life

Mischa Barton arriving at Kings Cross St Pancras from Paris with a funny hat on

Through MrsBlogInternational community, I came accross a remarkable blog: PassionateForLife. What is very unusual about it is the focus on the passions in people’s lifes.’

And as far as passion is concerned, you may find there the ‘passion for humor’, ‘passion for writing’ and even ‘passion that went wrong’.

You may also choose to share your own passion(s) with others.  Very interesting concept of the blog, covering all topics imaginable and at the same time being recognizable because of the ‘passion’’s edge.

P.S. Has Mischa Barton passion for hats?

BlogSWOT 10 – The College Warrior

college-warriorIt was interesting for me to visit the blog TheCollegeWarrior at least because of 1 reason: the WP theme Arthemia, which I like very much and intend to use in the make up of my other website.

Anyway, the SWOT is below:

S:

- good template, design

- good header – simple and informative at the same time good, solid colors: red and white.

- the blog targets one special group: namely college students,  it is also a kind of niche and the blogger is consequently filling it.

W:

- the ad coming suddenly out of the blue and filling the whole screen is definitely a no-no

- looks like you have some interesting categories, but it is not necessarily that your articles stick to them, e.g. article ‘The Campus Drug Guide’ under ‘Career’??!! No, thanks!

- it is hard to locate you, it is hard to say what area /country you cover

- it also seems like your blog is mostly by guys and for guys – cannot imagine any girl visiting you on the regular basis – but I may be wrong!

O:

- I think you may have many opportunities with your blog as the niche is good and the plans are ambitious, but you need to make a concrete plan what do you want to achieve with the site, who do you really want to target (men, women, career-students, party-students, etc.). For now it looks like the party=social section dominates it all. In that case I think you should underline it more – and not giving some false impression that there is anything to do with ‘improving of ACADEMIC, SOCIAL, and INTELLECTUAL lives’.

- I would say that once you will decide to cover only the area of your activity at the moment (Seattle?) you may be very successful with your blog then covering the whole universe. Believe me, I know what I’m talkig about as I made this mistake with my ‘international’ and ‘global’ websites – it is many times too big challenge to fulfill!

- you may try to include more informations about the events, lectures, cultural happenings, etc. in the area you live

T:

- I am not sure, frankly as the college-blogs are not too familiar to me. This is the first one of this kind I see so far.

BlogSWOT 9 – Provocation of Mine(d)

provocation-of-mindThis time, the turn has come to the blog Provocation of Mine(d). The author – Rebecca – has finally decided to make an assessment of her blog by the outsider – me. I hope you can use my points to anything.

S:
- good writing style
- you are consequently personal
- you seem to have a great and loyal group of visitors – assessing on the basis of comments received

W:
- the DESIGN is absolutely DREADFUL! It kills completely your personal approach, it’s not only the visitor that is lost in your template – you are also feeling uncomfortable, I can bet on it! The template is not only boring, but also extremely wide, which makes a huge clash with the intimacy of your thoughts. It’s like reading a poem at the football stadion without a microphone…
- the header is also much too big, much too formal.
- the name of your blog is a bit confusing – but definitely remarkable. Bt the risk is that the visitor who would like to comeback at the site will forget the last letter of yor url (d or e??)
- the site is loading extremely slowly – guess some plugins/widgets you implemented at the site – you definitely do not need so much of them!

O:
- I think that due to the fact that your strong side is writing, the basics are solid for continue with a good quality blogging. You’re probably right that you need to describe yourself a bit better, become recognizable, remarkable because one or more features which are characteristic for you only: your sense of humor, writing from the woman/daughter/pet-lover/democrat/fishing person/etc, etc.
The simplest and most logical would be focusing on PROVOCATION – as your title indicates. As for now, it’s too little of it there. Some blogs simply take a very concrete approach starting each of their posts with the same noun/verb/etc, see e.g. http://gosmelltheflowers.com/.
Those are the suggestions only – just trying to make you understand my point of being a blogger others remember for something special.

T:
- it’s always hard to say what are the threats for a blog – in the Web where all other blogs are potential threats. Your very own threat would be the visitors who will never comeback due to the unfriendly design.

Overall, I think that you have the basics of a good blogger: your great writing style and the loyal readers. Those 2 points are crucial for blogging I believe, so all that I have ben writing about here – no matter how harsh it was – is at the 2nd place.
Wish you all the best and look forward to seeing you grow!

BlogSWOT 8 – Your Epifany

your-epifanyEven if I am not a woman with afro hair, asked for a blog review, visited YourEpifany. It was a great experience.

S:

- the template is very nice – is it really blogger? looks like an awesome WP theme!
- there is no doubt about what you’re writing – and you’re very consequent, you’re found your niche
- the posts are not too short and not too long, greatly illustrated and organized
- the colours match very much the subject of your blog, and the composition of colours is neat and nice

W:
- apparently, you have a huge issue with your header! need to be fixed ASAP!
- the menu section should be more visible
- The Beauty of the Month is a great initiative, but have an impression that a bit neglected – cannot see neither the beauties nor the months!

O:
- just a thought but would suggest that you may try to find equally focused blogs written about other colours/types of hair: blond, dark, red, straight – etc, if any. There would be an opportunity of cooperating and supporting each others blogs.
- focus not only on women but also on men and maybe even children..
- focus on other colors of the skin – as the expression: ‘women of color’ covers those as well

T:
- it’s hard to say as I have never explored this niche as the pale European, but can imagine that even if there ust be some similar coverage at the Web, so still the potential of it is big. You should definitely keep posting and spread the word about your blog to the targeted audience.

BlogSWOT 7 – WagerWitch

wagerwitchFirst time to WagerWitch? Yes, indeed…

S:
- good template
- your niche is obvious: online casino promotions
- nice header – even if the Witch could actually be bigger, much more visible

W:
- the site looks good, however in a way the first impression is that there is something missing. I understand that you woud like to be professional, but there are some details that point out that you’re not, e.g. too little font in the ‘First time to WagerWitch’- text, the conduit toolbar is out of proportions, the casino/spotlight of the week tabs do not work
- the design could have been more colorful, maybe
- as the person who has no idea about the online casino plays, I feel confused and not interested in reading your blog. It is of course my fault, you may argue, but what I would like to say by this is that …

O:
- …you may make one page explaining what online casino is all about. This would eventually make some random visitors interested in your site and in what you have to offer
- implement also some online-casino-news-related posts in order ot increase the number of interested seo friendly keywords
- I would say: because you’re a blog only, be more personal in your writing style – in this way you may attract more loyal users.

T:
- this would be only theorical as i do not know the niche too much, but guess that the people with interests in online-casinos would choose the more professional sites with more choice of offers.
