Well, I got him – as he says himself.
He has been catched in my promise of making a BlogSWOT of his blog, http://cookingforassholes.blogspot.com/ and make his blogging life better.
Well, the below is what it ended with:
S:
- the idea is great: a cooking guide, very down-to-earth, a man’s approach to cooking, and ‘yes, it’s possible – even an asshole can do it!’ – message which sounds very trustworthy
- your photos are very good: look natural and at the same time look like actually the food tastes good. My own view is that photos are very essential in the cooking-guides, too artificial makes you feel unsure, too ‘natural’ can end in ‘disgusting’. Yours are very balanced.
- the blog design is clear/clean which is perfect in your case
W:
- well, first of all, think you really do not need to use so much of ‘f+´¨’ in your language. . It does not make too much sense to me, as your message comes through also without it
- your hair at the photo… I believe that a good cook with respect for himself should wear a hat or at least should not expose his hair as you do. In your case the possiblility of finding a hair in your food is too big. And please, do not tell me I am old-fashioned: it’s pure logic.
- think you may do some better categorising of your posts, not only into the meals as it is the case now, but also into the type of food, e.g. vegetables, meat, fish, etc. And the categories should be much more visible then they are now.
- also, in case you do not have the traditional list of ingredients specified, you may underline them in a way, so they are more visible. Right now they are lost in the text.
O:
- as you asked me: ’Amongst other things I would like to know what I could possibly do different for expansion (e.g. beer/wine/liquor reviews, cooking product reviews, something that is not a review, etc.)’. And with this you actually answered yourself. Just go for it! Great idea with cooking products available in the supermarkeds – and your view of them based on own experience. You may add the review of the restaurants/bars you visit. Cooking books. Your recommendations, etc. etc.
- noticed that you have not too many comments, but your blog is pretty new as I can see. My advice is: work on connecting with your potential target group: try to define who is it (who are those assholes: men, women, in Portland only, how old? etc.)
- you may also involve your visitors - I noticed the post where you suggest them submitting their miserable photos to you and you will make their disaster-dishes rock - this one should be ’sticky’, or somewhere in your sidebar. Use it as your own marketing tool in the forum discussions, etc. I’m sure it’s going to work! Great idea…
T:
- there are many sites with recipes at the Web, the google-keyword competition is strong. I would suggest focusing on your local area and brand yourself as a cooking dude from Portland. Then you’ll find your niche.
In case your goal is to attract more traffic to your blog, suggest also taking a look at this post about the importance of keywords. In this blog you’ll generally find a lot of tips for better blogging. In case you don’t (damn) care, just leave it…
